In 1978 Dominica joined the Commonwealth.

In 1957 The Russian Sputnik 2 took the first animal into space. The Spacecraft took a dog called Laika into Earth’s Orbit. Laika (pronounced Liker) survived the trip.

In 1924 Hitler and 2,000 Nazi members marched through Munich and into Munich Beer Hall. Hitler took over the meeting that was being held there by important Bavarian politicians and made claims that he would overthrow the German Government and with their help place them at the heart of government. On the 4th of November Hitler again began to march through Munich but they were met by armed police and the uprising was quashed. Hitler was arrested for the Act that would later be called ‘the Beer Hall Putsch’ and sentenced to 5 years in prison. Over the next few months, while in prison, Hitler wrote ‘Mein Kampf’. Due to political pressure from the growing Nazi party Hitler was released after 9 months and returned to continue his plans for Germany.

In 1918 the Kiel Mutiny began which quickly spread to revolution throughout Germany, putting an end to not only its monarchy but also the First World War.

On the 31st of May 1916 a major naval battle, the Battle of Jutland, began between the Imperial German Navy and the British Royal Navy (aided by the Australian and Canadian Royal Navies). The German Fleet was vastly outnumbered and despite causing more damage to the Royal Naval fleet then they had received the German Navy knew they could never again risk another such confrontation again. For the rest of the war the German High Seas fleet was trapped and unable to break free into the North Sea. They were forced to rely their submarine or U-Boat fleet which were too slow to be effective against military vessels. While they proved effective against merchant and civilian vessels the German Navy had nothing effective against the might of the Royal Navy as war continued.

On the 24th of October 1918 the naval order came in for the German High Seas Fleet to attack the British Grand Fleet in a desperate attempt to end Royal Navy’s supremacy which was known as “The Glorious Death Ride Of The High Seas Fleet”. By the 3rd of November 1918 many German naval sailors began mass uprising against the German leaders which became known as the Kiel Mutiny. This uprising was mirrored throughout Germany and revolution ended the German Empire and forced Germany to effectively surrender to the Allies on the 11th of November 1918.
