In 1989 an earthquake measuring magnitude 6 hits the Soviet state of Tajikistan. First reports feared 1,000 people dead but the final death count was 274. Tajikistan is struck by many tremors, recording approximately 3,000 a year, which is an average of 8 a day, but it has been a while since a large earthquake has hit the country.
In 1968 North Korea seize the USS Pueblo and her crew of 83 personnel. North Korea took the ship claiming that it was spying within North Korean waters but the United States maintain that the ship was carrying out routine operations in Japanese waters. Many Americans believed that the ship was taken by Communist North Korea in solidarity with Vietnam during the war, which was another communist country. It took the United States over a year of negotiations to ensure the safe return of the 83 crew members.
In 1957 a second round of peace talks between the United States and Vietnam lead to an agreed ceasefire as of the 27th of January 1957 GMT (8:00 am on the 28th January local time). President Nixon appeared on national television to deliver the news of “peace with honour” in Vietnam.
In 1922 Insulin was first used to treat diabetes. Fourteen year old Leonard Thompson was the first human to be treated with insulin in Toronto, Canada. Previously the only treatment was a diet low in carbohydrates and sugars but high in fat and protein gaining patients up to a year after diagnosis. But in 1921 at the University of Toronto Canadian scientists Charles Best and Frederick Banting successfully performed tests in canine subjects proving that insulin was the key. The discovery saved millions of lives, earning Frederick Banting and J.J.R. MacLeod (as scientist that assisted in human trials) the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1923.
In 1556 an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.2 hit Shaanxi Province in China Killing an estimated 830,000 people. In some cities every building was destroyed and several crevasses up to 60ft deep opened up throughout the Province. This death toll makes it the deadliest earthquake ever recorded.
