In 2009 the Taliban blew up five more schools in Pakistan, making almost one hundred and fifty schools in the past year. The Taliban are targeting schools (most of which are girls schools) in protest to the education of women in Pakistan.
In 1981 United States and Iranian officials meet in Algiers to sign the Algiers Accord facilitating the release of fifty-two US hostages. They had been held for fourteen months by Islamist students at the US Embassy in the Iranian capital of Tehran.
In 1966 Indira Ghandi became India’s first and only female Prime Minister. Although not related to Mohandas Ghandi (also known as Mahatma Ghandi) her father Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, worked along side Mahatma Ghandi. Indira Ghandi was Prime Minister from 1966-1977 and then again from 1980 till she was assassinated in 1984.
In 1915 The first Zeppelin attack on England by the Germans as part of their World War I offensive. The Zeppelins used in World War I could carry 2,000 kilos of explosives which were dropped on English towns and cities. In this first attack, two zeppelins bombed Great Yarmouth and Kings Lynn killing four people but larger raids were to follow.
In 1883 the first electric street light system to use overhead wiring was demonstrated in Roselle, New Jersey, USA by Thomas Edison. The system ran from a single steam-driven generator and powered one hundred and fifty lamps.
In 1861 The state of Georgia seceded from the United States of America due to differences in opinion over slavery. Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and South Carolina have already seceded for the same reason.
