In 2005 the European Space Agency's Huygens probe landed on Titan’s surface after parachuting through its atmosphere. It was part of a joint mission with NASA’s Cassini Orbiter. The Cassini-Huygens mission was to study Saturn’s System and it was launched on the 15th of October 1997. When they reached Saturn’s system Cassini (operated by NASA) collected data while orbiting Saturn and many of its moons. Huygens (operated by the ESA) landed on Saturn’s icy moon, Titan; on the 14th of January 2005 (the second largest moon in our solar system).It began collecting important data during its landing and sent back vital data. It is believed that Titan has all the requirements for life to exist.

In 2002 the United Kingdom’s cattle was officially declared free of foot and mouth disease.

In 1969 the accidental detonation of a rocket causes an explosion aboard the USS Enterprise (the Worlds first nuclear powered aircraft carrier) while it was docked in Pearl Harbour, Hawaii, United States. The explosion destroyed 15 planes and injured over 300 people. 

In 1969 Sir Matt Busby announces his retirement as manager of Manchester United Football Club. He first took the job in 1945 making him the longest serving manager in English football. Within his twenty four years as manager he has rebuilt Old Trafford, which was badly damaged by the blitz in World War II, he also survived the plane crash which tragically killed eight players in 1958 and in 1968 he lead Manchester United to become the first English side to win the European Cup.

In 1934 more sightings of the Loch Ness Monster were reported by tourists visiting the famous site. They claim to have observed a 50ft sea serpent like creature in the Loch. Original mention of a monster in Loch Ness comes from St Columba's biography in 565 AD. However modern day sightings and ‘hype’ started again in 1933, after the release of the original King Kong movie which featured a long sea serpent like creature. The King Kong movie was released on the 2nd of March 1933 and was closely followed by the first ‘photographic evidence’ of the Loch Ness Monster said to have been taken on the 12th of November 1933 by a Mr Hugh Grey. The photo is an extremely blurred and out of focus image which could resemble many things but was released on the front cover of the Scottish Daily on the 8th of December under the heading of “Monster photographs of the mysterious Loch Ness object”.

In 1907 1,000 people died in an earthquake in Jamaica.
