In 1997 a group of Scottish scientist announced the birth of the first successfully cloned mammal, Dolly the sheep. Dr Ian Wilmut and his team cloned a ewe by taking the D.N.A. from a single adult cell and placing it in an egg they latter placed in a surrogate female sheep. Once born they tested the D.N.A. of Dolly revealing that it was an exact match to the donor sheep and was not related to the surrogate. Predictably the announcement caused controversy around the world and Dr Wilmut stated that he found the idea of human cloning repugnant. At the time of the announcement Dolly was a healthy ewe of 7 months but her health didn’t last. In 2003 the discovery of progressive lung disease led to the decision for Dolly to be put to sleep.
